2 out of 5 stars I am going to hunter around for another thermostat!   December 20, 2008
Dana Humfleet (delaware, ohio)
I had some issues with my old Hunter thermostat - but not enough to prevent me from buying another one when it finally gave out fifteen years later. This one however may be my last.

Fatal Flaw - When the thermostat calls for heat, I expect it to tell the furnace to light the gas burner and let the furnace take care of controlling the blower - just like every other thermostat I have ever owned. Oh no, this baby turns on the fan right away (by energizing G along with W1) resulting in two minutes of cold air blowing out of the registers until it slowly warms up. Starting the fan right away would be proper behavior if I had an electric furnace, but not for a gas furnace like mine. The settings are correct, the wiring is correct.

If I disconnect the fan (green) wire, it works correctly - but I loose the ability to run the fan by itself - which I frequently want to do.

Hunter tech support has been useless - I spoke with two people who both must be heating their homes with campfires. After reviewing the programming by reading the same manual I had, both put me on hold. After a bit BOTH TOLD ME THAT ALL HUNTER THERMOSTATS WORK THIS WAY! (Really?!!) One of them, "Sonya," could tell I was not satisfied and promised to have a Master Tech call me back (I'm still waiting). And, an e-mail left on their support site remains unanswered after days (they promise a response in 72 hrs). The on-line support they crow about in the manual is just a .pdf of the same manual that crows about the on-line support.

The operator interface is bungled pretty badly. There is a lot of functionality there, but much more thought should have gone into simplifying the operation. A thermostat should show the setpoint, show the temperature, allow you to turn the setpoint up or down, all without requiring an advanced degree. Of these four things, this thermostat only gets only one right - it shows the temperature.

Example: To turn the temperature up one degree takes SIX (6) keystrokes! If a visitor to your house attempted it, it would be hopelessly complicated for them.

There is a reason this thing was on sale. If you have a heat pump or electric furnace, (and an engineering degree)...maybe.

As for the fan issue,I suspect either this thermostat is broke, or there is a diode I can snip out to isolate G from W1. If your thermostat is behaving like mine is, please leave a comment - especially if you figured out how to fix it.

See you at Lowe's!

4 out of 5 stars Very pleased with thermostat, instructions - not so much   November 25, 2008

Being that I am familiar with HVAC I popped my old thermostat off and had this one up and running in no time, I love the easy display and it is almost self explanatory, almost... You can go ahead and throw the instruction booklet in the trash and call tech support if you need any real instructions. But the instruction booklet will help you get the old one off and new one wired up correctly at least. Also it stated that this thermostat will not auto-season change over in manual operation mode. This is NOT true, it WILL auto switch over heat to cool and visa versa. This is exactly what I wanted, to be able to set it to one single temp and leave it there indefinitely and it does a great job of it. I'm very satisfied!

4 out of 5 stars Aesthetically enticing, but lousy instructions   November 17, 2008

We replaced our Totaline P474-0100 (non-programable) with this Hunter model tonight that we had purchased from Lowe's. Initally we chose this model because it was aestetically pleasing, but as I can attetst from the last two hours of trial-and-error (and a lot of googeling on my wive's part), the instructions leave much to be desired.

The old Totaline had the following:
R=Red
G=Green
Y1=Yellow
W1=Orange
C=Blue

In order to make BOTH the A/C and Heat work on the heatpump I had to do the following:
RC/R=Red
C=Blue
Y1=Yellow
O=Orange
G=Green
Jumper RC/R to RH

The jumper is shown in the HVAC diagram, not the heat pump diagram of the manual. I also did not use the "Optional Jumper" of E to W2. As of right now we have both Heat and A/C. I am new to the whole Heat pump thing, and am not real sure about the emergency heat, since my old thermostat did not have a connection for E-heat, although it had a program for it.
I came up with the wiring connections through a couple different reviews and wished they had posted thier final wiring, so I hope this helps someone out a little.

4 out of 5 stars Great unit but not for the technically challenged   November 1, 2008
J. Thomas (Plano, TX)
I was very hesitant in purchasing this unit because of the conflicting reviews here. I decided to finally go with this to try it out and return it within my 30 day return period at Lowes if it didn't work out. I've had it for over a week now and I would say I like the unit. I think my wife is getting tired of me telling her about the new cool feature that I found out about the unit. If you are someone who wants a simple unit, this is not it but I like a little challenge so I took this on. so far I like the unit and still learning new things. I gave it a 4 star because I think they could have made it a little bit more user friendly. Overall I recommend this unit.

Few questions I have that someone might be able to answer:
Is there a way to have the fan recirculating bring in warm air? It's cold here but not cold enough for my heater to come on so everytime the fan comes on it's bringing in cool not cold air. Maybe I should just turn the recirculation off during the winter season? I also haven't figured out how to program in the fan recirculation time.
Also for the auto switchover, I have to program in the heat and cold separately?

4 out of 5 stars Good features but watch out for manual error   October 23, 2008

I bought this thermostat at Menards. It was not too hard replacing the old thermostat following the manual. It has a lot of nice features. Installed it a month ago. Everything worked great until the cold weather started this week. It does not start the heater. The screen shows heater running but actually not. Removed the unit and double checked the wiring but still without any clue. Finally talked to the tech support after 20 minutes waiting on the phone. The technician asked a few questions and then told me that the jumper should be connected between RC and RH, not as specified in the user manual to connect between W2 and E for a heat pump system. It is a mis-print. Fixed the wiring and it's working fine again. Really like its features so I still give it a four-star rating.
