5 out of 5 stars Easy to use and effective   December 19, 2008
HappyToShareMyThoughts (NC)
We decided to go "green" with our mower and selected the Gilmour based on good reviews. We have about 1/2 acre of fescue (NC), with large flat areas and parts with a severe slope. I found the slope very difficult with a gas push/self-propelled mower - almost to the point of considering it unsafe for fear of slipping into the mower. Here's the synopsis . . .

Putting it together - easy to put together. Everyone should be able to do it without any problems.
Initial thoughts - I actually found the sounds a little louder than what I expected - although I haven't tried to adjust it yet to see if that would help. It is much less noisy than a gas-mower though.
The cut - I think it cuts fine - the 20" is good and the height adjust is very good as well. I try to cut the grass to 4". At times it will miss a few grass blades and I will have some "strays" standing up in the yard. A run perpendicular to the original direction typically resolves the issues. This mostly occurs on the very hilly portion of the yard. I haven't noticed this on the flat sections.
I haven't noticed any real difference in the time to mow. Maybe it's just that I don't have to turn up the volume on my ipod when I mow now.
I haven't really used the bag catcher except for once to try it out. It did seem fine.
The reel did jam once when it attacked a large pine cone.
Easy to store.
Great to feel more green - and lower the carbon footprint.
I feel it is healthier for the grass - imagine you getting a haircut and the barber saying "weren't just going to tear it to the length you need."
Storing the unit is a breeze, and other reviewers are right that the garage has lost it's previous "gassy" smell.
Movement - I find the ability to use the unit on hills much better than a gas or even a self-propelled unit. It's relatively light - and easy to move.
I would recommend this unit and would purchase it again.

Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Works well but has limitations   November 13, 2008

I think the mower is good. I had forgotten that it won't cut close to the edge of the sidewalk well though. Also, I do not think the grass catcher is helpful at all, there is always a gap between the blades and the catcher and a lot of the grass falls through. It cuts well and it's easy to push, that's the plus, along with being "green" which was my goal.

5 out of 5 stars Going Green...   November 4, 2008

I got this for my husband and he absolutely loves it. No more trips to the gas station and waking up the neighbors. It's lightweight and quiet. Don't get me wrong, if you have major weeds and overgrown edges you won't get the job done like a landscaper so you may want to hang on the the edger. Over all a good product and easy to assemble. Our neighbors are always asking questions and interested in our results.

4 out of 5 stars Gilmore Reel Mower   October 24, 2008

I really enjoy using it--no cranks to pull, no gas to buy, refill, no odors when mower is in use. It doesn't cut as evenly as a gas mower does, but I love it. It's easy being green!

4 out of 5 stars Good value   October 16, 2008
Sara Harris (Seabeck, WA)
I have not used the mower too many times yet, but it definitely does the job on my tiny yard. I was all about getting the maximum width for my price, but with the teeny size of my yard I probably could have gotten a smaller mower for the little spaces I have to get into. However, this mower perfoms very well--it was a breeze to set up, and the blades easily raise and lower. The grass catcher gets most everything, although sometimes it takes a little sweep of the back of the mower to get everything moving into the catcher. All in all, great product.
